It’s starting to feel a lot like fuck this: While many of us are dusting off old photos and sentimental items, Swedish melodic death metal virtuosos SOILWORK have unearthed a different kind of trip down memory lane. Today, the band digitally releases ‘Kvicksilver’, a Swedish version of ‘Mercury Shadow’, originally released in 2002 on SOILWORK’s fourth album, Natural Born Chaos.
SOILWORK states: “Here’s an old gem from the vaults! ‘Kvicksilver’ means ‘mercury’ in Swedish, and somehow we decided to make a Swedish version of one of our songs during the recording of the Natural Born Chaos album, back in 2002. We think it turned out pretty damn cool and definitely deserves to be shared with the world at this point. Enjoy ‘Mercury Shadow’ – all sung in Scanian dialect, we give you ‘Kvicksilver’!”

SOILWORK’s high-class creative consistency, which they have maintained throughout their career, is the virtue that probably best defines them. Founded at the end of 1995, SOILWORK released their debut album Steelbath Suicide in 1998, garnering a great early response. Vocalist Jake E describes the inspiration behind “IF I” and the video’s concept: “‘IF I’ is a song that embodies the influences we all grew up with from the Gothenburg metal scene. The video, directed by ourselves, features footage captured during our electrifying 9-show tour in Japan earlier this year.”

Guitarist Euge Valovirta shares the story behind the creation of the song: “I initially wrote the song for one of my YouTube videos, and the response was overwhelming. People were asking where they could purchase it. I sent it to Jake, and he instantly fell in love with it. He made some tweaks to the verse and chorus, giving it that distinct CYHRA touch. The result is fantastic—a melodic metal song reminiscent of the old school Gothenburg style. The title is a playful nod to a certain band that served as one of the song’s inspirations. The track kicks off with an amazing drum fill by Alex, and from there, it’s a wild ride. Hell yeah!”
Marcus Sunesson comments, “‘IF I’ is one of the faster, up-tempo songs on our new album. It’s Cyhra’s way of paying homage to the Gothenburg scene, combining glorious melodies and riffs. It’s a real banger and a blast to play!”

DÉTERRÉ means ‘Unearthed” in French. This is exactly what the latest release from DESPISED ICON is. The EP consists of 5 old-school songs dating back to 2004. It seemed fitting to remaster and re-release these early recordings to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the band, which took form in 2002.
DÉTERRÉ was recorded throughout 2004 by Yannick St-Amand at Wild studio for a few songs and drums at Studio Victor while guitars, bass, and vocals by J-F Dagenais at his home studio. The band produced the album, and mixing was a joint effort between Yannick St-Amand and Jean-François Dagenais. Alexandre Goulet created the artwork for the EP.

‘The Weight Of The Mask’ was recorded at The Ranch Production House in the UK. The album was expertly produced and mixed by Lewis Johns, with Grant Berry handling the mastering. Engineering duties were carried out by Lewis Johns, assisted by Matt Janke, with additional editing by Kel Pinchin and Sebastien Sendon.
Renowned artist and illustrator Hestor Aspland created the stunning album artwork, which beautifully captures the essence of Svalbard’s melodies. The intricate floral elements represent the sonic beauty within the music, while the somber animal skull mask symbolizes the lyrical content.
