Swedish melodic death metal powerhouse Amon Amarth has announced its thirteenth studio album, The Allfather Awakens, arriving October 2 through Metal Blade Records. Alongside the announcement, the band has released the album’s opening track, “Gjallarhorn,” accompanied by an official music video that signals a triumphant return to the group’s signature blend of crushing riffs, soaring melodies, and Viking-inspired storytelling.
Oden Once Again Takes Center Stage
While The Allfather Awakens is not a concept album, Norse mythology once again serves as its creative backbone. The record draws inspiration from Oden, the Allfather and god of war, wisdom, death, magic, and poetry, weaving together ten historically inspired tales centered on sacrifice, conflict, and honor. Rather than telling one continuous story, each song explores a different chapter rooted in Viking legend and ancient Scandinavian history.
The lead single, “Gjallarhorn,” follows the band’s unexpected acoustic release “Upphaf,” but quickly returns listeners to Amon Amarth’s unmistakable melodic death metal assault. Built around driving guitar riffs, an anthemic chorus, and cinematic atmosphere, the track revisits the legend of Oden sacrificing his eye at Mímisbrunnr in exchange for limitless wisdom.
A Different Approach to Songwriting
For the first time in the band’s history, Amon Amarth approached the album by fully completing one song before moving to the next. Recorded across two sessions with longtime producer Jacob Hansen in Denmark between spring 2025 and March 2026, the process allowed the band to refine every arrangement individually rather than treating the album as a continuous production cycle. Guitarist Olavi Mikkonen explained that the goal was to make every track strong enough to stand on its own while maintaining a cohesive album experience.
The record also marks a subtle shift in guitar tone, with the band moving away from more modern amplifier setups in favor of classic Marshall amplifiers to achieve a rawer, more organic sound.
