Danish death metal/metallic hardcore goliaths LIFESICK today drop their fiery new video for "Hollow Treats." The savage new track comes off the band’s equally ferocious full-length, Loved By None, Hated By All full-length, released on November 1st through Metal Blade Records.

LIFESICK manifests brutal and brutally honest songs with lyrics inspired by the turbulent nature of life. Musically influenced by Swedish death metal, the band’s authentic and explosive mixture of crushing tones and modern breakdowns create an uncompromising sound and vision.

Comments the band on "Hollow Treats," "When we were born, we were told all these fairytales about what the world had in store for us. But as soon as you get a taste, you realize there’s nothing inside – no love, no compassion, nothing. This song is catchy with groovy two-step rhythms and even groovier breakdowns. It’s a hardcore track with plenty of sing-along parts, and it ends with a twist of acoustic elements."

LIFESICK was forged in Fredericia, Denmark in 2015. After three full-lengths of increasing weight and intensity, 2023’s Life And Other Lies EP brought the band’s sobering death/metallic hardcore to Metal Blade Records, where they have come of age with the kaleidoscopic fury and ironclad gloom of Loved By None, Hated By All.

As with previous offerings, the LP was recorded by Jacob Bredahl at his Dead Rat facility. This time Bredahl’s role expanded beyond engineering, helping to shape and revise new material before twiddling a single knob. "He came down to our rehearsal room where we played all the songs for him live, so he could add his touch to each song or edit stuff that we might have been a little blind to from playing the songs too much. This was the first time we did this, and it was very effective."

Mixing was farmed out to Taylor Young at The Pit, "to give it a different touch or nuance from our previous releases," while the tracks were handed to noise collective John Cxnnor, "to enhance the album with sound design and samples throughout every song, to better unify the album. We provided them with all the songs, along with keywords about the lyrical themes and the album artwork. With this information, they created unique dark industrial samples that perfectly fit the songs and our vision for the album."

The results ring loud and clear from this tumultuous masterwork of bleak aggro beauty. Loved By None, Hated By All is unquestionably the band’s finest recording to date which is no easy feat considering the compulsive force of previous releases — there is some special spark of magic at work here.

Founded in 1997 in the Swiss region of Bern, PAYSAGE D’HIVER remained a strictly underground phenomenon at first. Wintherr unleashed a steady stream of 10 full-length "demos" and 4 split-EPs that earned him an excellent reputation while a massive following grew by word of mouth. When the Swiss came "out of hiding" with "Im Wald" ("In the Forest") in 2020, their regular debut album even entered the German charts, which meant mainstream recognition despite standing firmly with both feet in the underground.

On the third regular album "Die Berge" (‘The Mountains"), PAYSAGE D’HIVER mastermind Wintherr has perfectly captured the essence of his mountainous Swiss home within the sound of raw black metal. Note for note, these grey giants of rock come awake to life in song. Majestic, powerful, dangerous, threatening, and yet also inherent of a fierce beauty, these massive tracks of epic length echo the huge proportions of their source of inspiration and amount to a playing time of more than 100 minutes.

I DON’T RECOGNIZE THAT GUY

Last week we shot some video scenes of me for the "Goth Rave" video.

We shot a simple light setup in front of a black background and I contemplated wearing sunglasses for a Faderheas shoot again for the first time since 2017.

Just out of curiosity I ran a small poll on my WhatsApp group where I outlined the situation and asked:

As you can see over 93% said "yes, sunglasses" – so I felt confirmed in my idea to do a little throwback look. Also because the song is a fast and heavy club banger, so I thought going back to a pair of nice shades would be a good idea.

OR MAYBE NOT?

The interesting situation happened when I looked at the video footage the next day:

1) it didn’t look fitting for the video at all, because the whole light setup was too flat and I had made bad conceptual decisions

2) I did not recognize the guy with the sunglasses. This person was simply not me anymore.

Here’s a random picture of my yelling along to the song:

I really like the look of these sunglasses!

They look expensive, they have a good shape for my face and I like wearing them outside when it’s sunny and I am just doing normal things.

BUT:

The 2006-2016 "Faderhead-with-shades" character is utterly weird to me. The gestures, the mannerisms – everything.

The interesting part is that I then later decided to use live footage from our show at E-Tropolis 2022 in the "Goth Rave" video and the guy in that video looked familiar to me.

This is such an interesting development to me, because today I seem to be less familiar with the guy who needed sunglasses for a look (and as a shield), while I am at ease with a guy who had 8kg/20lbs of extra covid weight and tired eyes.

WHAT DOES HE HAVE TO HIDE?

When I looked at my newly shot sunglasses footage, I thought

"Hmm, maybe that’s why in recent years, I’ve always chuckled when I saw anyone wearing sunglasses in music videos?"

Because whenever I saw that, all I could think of was:

"What is he/she trying to hide from?"

and

"Wearing sunglasses is so bad for establishing an emotional connection!"

BEING FREE

When I started seeing my therapist in 2016, one of the things she said was

"One of the things I want for you is to not be forced into certain learned behaviors, but to be able to choose if you want to act like that"

And one of the first things I thought when writing this newsletter was

"Oh, it looks like I am free of whatever made me choose my behaviors back then".

But the more I thought about it, the less sure I am that I am now free to choose my behavior. Maybe I am now NOT free to "act like the sunglasses guy" for whatever reason.

This is very interesting to me, which means that I will re-try the sunglasses look in the future to see how I feel about it then. Cause maybe it was just the ill-concepted lighting design that made everything weirder than it should have been.

I mean: I surely look better with sunglasses!

The question is: how do I wear sunglasses and act in a way that isn’t borderline goofy, while I turn 49 next week.

Or maybe there simply is no way – unless I have to pretend for the sake of the art/product that comes out.

Finding freedom’s not as easy as it sounds.

Anyway, that’s it from me!

For mixing we went back to Jonas Kjellgren as we have been very happy with the sound of ’A Christmas Carol’ and ’Metal United’ says bassist Chris Davidsson. Regarding the amazing artwork for Power Train, Chris explains: "For the artwork we teamed up with Jan Yrlund / Darkgrove design. It invites you to join this majepic ride of the Power Train, imagine standing there on the platform eagerly waiting, and you hear ”all aboard”!".

Shortly before the release of their new album, MAJESTICA will play a few shows, perfect to warm up for the upcoming album. The tour, which is called ‘The Dead Don’t Die Tour‘, kicks off on December 26th in Nürnberg, Germany. Furthermore, MAJESTICA will play a festival show at ‘No Sleep After X-Mas Festival’ in Runkel with some extra focus on their Christmas album A Christmas Carol on December 29th.

On “Psychotic Banana”, the band combines brutality and beauty, delving into a vast variety of styles. While starting from an Industrial Metal base, each track has been influenced by a different corner of the music world: electronic music, techno, brutal deathcore breakdowns, deep dark melodies and so much more make this record a truly unique experience.

The album title “Psychotic Banana” perfectly captures the essence of this record: Changeability. It’s a journey that reflects Hand of Juno’s musical exploration, but also their path as a band. Starting from the first song, listeners experience constant changes in direction, building in intensity and aggression, which is interrupted by the final song – Perhaps the long-awaited arrival at a stable destination.

Ahead of their next studio album, Saddiction, due on 14th February 2025 via Nuclear Blast, French doom metal pioneers HANGMAN´S CHAIR are back in full force with ‘Kowloon Nights‘. This powerful, shoegaze-influenced track, with its disconcerting guitar riff, is a direct reference to the city destroyed in the 90s.

HANGMAN’S CHAIR comments about Saddiction: "SADDICTION is the contraction of 2 words, sadness, and addiction. It means the addiction to sadness. 7th effort of the band, for us, Saddiction is the second album of the new trilogy that started with A Loner back in 2022 and it’s the logical continuity. Keeping up with the cold, massively reverbed, and chorused atmosphere but now mixed with what Hangman’s Chair has been known for, the heaviness and the low-tuned sound, thanks to the magical sound engineer Francis Caste, once again. Valnoir of Metastazis designed the cover and resumed what the identity of Hangman’s Chair is all about in its purest form, concrete, pavement, bleakness, and ultra-modern solitude of the Parisian « banlieue ». Following the release of the extended version of their 2023 Projekt album Sentimental Craving For Beauty, the duo of Vif Nüte and Bes Eirid returns with a new video, the live version of their song "My Blues” performed this summer at May Dec Studio in Vanadzor, Armenia. This version (which is featured in the 26-track Deluxe Edition of the album), showcases the band in primal minimalist form. The already ascetic arrangement undergoes several more layers of purification allowing Bes and Vif to perform the song with the minimum involvement of pre-programming. (Despite their inclination to electronic music, in their live performances VEiiLA relies on a limited number of instruments which, apart from the sequenced drum-machine, are all hand-played). This spartan approach results in an even more intimate and spacey sound.

The visuals represent VEiiLA’s fondness for noir-ish atmosphere, which in this case is attained by the grainy dark ambiance and cold cubist interior of the room, as well as nervous camera movements that jump between close-ups and long shots, bringing to mind the work of Anton Corbijn.

The New York City-based electronic band INTERFACE has just released their seventh studio album entitled "Zero-Sum Equation." Focusing on many of the ongoing struggles of the human condition with an introspective view into personal accountability and a scathing socio-political polemic, "Zero-Sum Equation" provides the ultimate epitaph on the New York band’s career. These messages are delivered over driving rhythms and strong melodies such as the tuneful single “Tomorrow Is Now”. The album also features contrasting songs such as the harsh social commentary of "21st Century" and "No Cause For Celebration," the melancholy "Disappearing Girl," and the heartfelt electro-pop of "Full Circle." Our Nameless Boy release new single ‘Mr Right’

Inspired by the emotionally charged, quiet/loud and sometimes frenetic dynamics of the late ‘90s/‘00s US alternative/emo scene, Bristol based alt-rock band Our Nameless Boy bring their own brand of raucous energy to their performances, with songs that are hard hitting and subtle in their intricacies.

New single ‘Mr Right’ was the band’s first attempt at writing about all the wonderful quirks of human interaction in the 21st century, with the main hook for the song, coming from a conversation with a family member about news item and current affairs.

Vocalist, Iain Gorrie shares, “For the most part Mr Right digs into how we all entrench our own views all too deeply to ever learn and grow positively. The lyric, “You could tell me that it’s not worth my time”, can be “finished” with “… to try to change my mind”, for example. I tried to add a more positive idea as to how we can acknowledge each other’s opinions or feelings during discourse in the middle section of the song, but then ultimately the message falls on deaf ears as the chant and chorus come back in.”

On the day of the single release, Our Nameless Boy, will host a unique ‘An evening with’ styled event at Common Room Bath as part of the ‘On The Rocks’ event which sees the band perform an intimate set alongside making cocktails behind the band.

Whilst the album (‘Colour from the Doves’, 2021) provides a deeply personal account of a Iains’ battle with cancer, more recently Our Nameless Boy have set their sights more outwardly, attempting to make sense of the modern human condition through narratives intended to inspire empathy and self-reflection both in themselves and others.
