Released ahead of World Mental Health Day, the Chicago industrial and darkwave artist transforms an intensely personal struggle into music while supporting mental health resources for the music community.
Behind the White Walls
Sometimes the loudest battles are the ones nobody else can hear.
I Ya Toyah confronts that uncomfortable reality with “WHITE WALLS,” a new single released October 9, 2026, ahead of World Mental Health Day on October 10.
Known for combining industrial electronics, darkwave, alternative rock and emotionally direct songwriting, the Chicago-area artist turns inward for a release that addresses psychological isolation, overwhelming thoughts and the exhausting struggle to escape one’s own mind.
The imagery is deliberately claustrophobic. White walls suggest confinement, while white noise represents the relentless mental interference that can make silence feel anything but peaceful. Together, they create a portrait of someone trapped in a space that exists as much psychologically as physically.
I Ya Toyah describes the song as emerging from a particularly difficult day when the emotional darkness became almost impossible to carry. Rather than allowing that experience to remain unspoken, she transformed it into music.
The resulting message is not simply about suffering. It’s about acknowledging that suffering, recognizing the people experiencing it and refusing to let silence have the final word.

Music With a Mission Beyond the Dancefloor
What makes “WHITE WALLS” especially meaningful is the initiative accompanying its release.
I Ya Toyah is donating 100% of the song’s proceeds from release day through October 10 to Backline, an organization dedicated to helping people working throughout the music industry access mental health care and support.
The initiative connects the song’s subject matter with a practical effort to support a community that often faces its own difficult relationship with mental health.
Artists, touring musicians, production crews and other industry professionals frequently work in environments shaped by unpredictable schedules, financial uncertainty, isolation and enormous personal expectations. Those pressures don’t disappear when the performance ends.
Rather than presenting music as a cure for those experiences, I Ya Toyah emphasizes something more immediate: listening, reaching out and recognizing when somebody may need support.
The single also continues the artist’s commitment to bringing intensely personal subject matter into electronic music without sacrificing her creative identity.
“WHITE WALLS” was written by I Ya Toyah, produced by I Ya Toyah and Johnny K, mixed by Johnny K and mastered by Howie Weinberg. The release artwork was created by Angelica Dulany.
🎶Listen Now
“WHITE WALLS” arrives with a message that extends well beyond its October 9 release. Mental health struggles are not always visible, and the people experiencing them may be the least likely to announce that something is wrong.
For I Ya Toyah, the song offers both an expression of personal vulnerability and an invitation to act. Check in on someone. Make space for difficult conversations. And remember that being heard can be the beginning of finding a way through.
Listeners who wish to support the initiative directly can also donate to Backline.
