On their latest collaboration the two wrote and recorded most of the album during the pandemic, exchanging musical ideas remotely. The result was a journey through unprecedented times, capturing lonely and cold emotions of isolation. Today, Combichrist release their new single and video, "Planet Doom," blending industrial metal’s intensity with the eerie allure of classic slasher horror films! This new offering pays tribute to the cinematic genre that has deeply influenced the band’s music. "Planet Doom" emerges as a unique creation, deeply rooted in Andy LaPlegua’s passion for horror films that blurs the lines between music, social commentary, and cinematic art.

Directed by Ben Winston, known for his work on “Hellbound,” the "Planet Doom" video is a visual feast for fans of gore, slasher films, and anyone who appreciates the art of storytelling through music videos in a way that only Combichrist can.

Andy LaPlegua, the visionary behind Combichrist, shares, "This video was nothing less than a passion project for me. Horror movies is a huge part of my life and influences the way I write music as well. The idea for this video started as a tribute to the movies that I loved as a kid and still love today. A lot of homage to the classics in this video. The video was shot through 3 cold November nights in Alabama, by Ben Winston, a great and upcoming movie director. It was all shot the way they used to do it. Low budget, all shot on 16mm film, and all practical special effects, all to get it that late 70’s early 80’s slasher look and feel. The lyrics of the song and the video really have no association at all, except from the title. Both works as a stand alone idea of a doomed planet: one in a form of a slasher video based on the movies we love, and the other a social documentary of the world we live in. Divided, biased, fear mongering, judgmental, an hateful religious society. The biggest question now is, when do we do the actual movie?"

The chorus, "Burn burn burn – burn it down – watch it all come crashing down," serves as a powerful rallying cry against the backdrop of a society fracturing under the weight of its own contradictions.

Acclaimed instrumental post-rock band IF THESE TREES COULD TALK is back with a new single, "Trail Of Whispering Giants," the group’s first new music in eight years, out today and streaming via Metal Blade Records.

"Trail Of Whispering Giants" marks the anticipated return of the Akron, Ohio-based lineup spearheaded by drummer Zack Kelly and his guitarist-brother Cody Kelly. IF THESE TREES COULD TALK has been praised by Metal Hammer for, "uplifting post-rock that layers cascading guitars over tight drums with a deep emotional resonance," while the lineup’s third LP and Metal Blade debut, 2016’s The Bones Of A Dying World, was called, "a fluid-flowing masterpiece that builds upon complex, progressive dreamscapes."

The Kelly brothers have been working on new material over the past year and are excited to reveal "Trail Of Whispering Giants." "It has been a minute since our last album, and we cannot wait to get things moving again. Cody and I have tried to ignite a new vision for the music while keeping the same elements and old vibes that makes IF THESE TREES COULD TALK," reveals Zack Kelly. "I would like to send thanks to the fans all over the world for their undying support and patience!"

In describing, "Trail Of Whispering Giants," he says the single is, "reminiscent of our songs ‘Solstice’ and ‘Earth Crawler’ from The Bones Of A Dying World and brings the same energy and ambiance as our previously released recordings."

The band will support "Trail Of Whispering Giants" with live shows and festival appearances. IF THESE TREES COULD TALK will be headliners at the PORTALS Festival in Hackney, UK on May 26th, marking the band’s first-ever UK performance. They’ll also perform a special hometown show on February 17th at Akron’s Musica, and will appear at the annual Post Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 27th.

Formed in 2005, IF THESE TREES COULD TALK released their eponymous debut EP in 2006 on indie label The Mylene Sheath, who also put out their debut studio album, Above The Earth, Below The Sky, on vinyl, digital and CD formats in 2009. The band self-released their second album, Red Forest, in March 2012, and followed it with a European tour in April of that year. After signing to Metal Blade and releasing The Bones Of A Dying World, the band’s previous albums were reissued through the label in 2021 and 2022.

Norway’s trailblazing cosmic voyagers, Enslaved, releasedtheir latest avant-garde creation Heimdal, one year ago.To celebrate the studio album’s first year of existence, the bandrecently announced the Heimdal (Deluxe) digital album, due out on March 1st 2024.

Heimdal (Deluxe) will include the studio album in full, as well as alternative versions of two album tracks ‘Forest Dweller‘ and ‘Congelia‘, both with sublime performances from renowned cellist Jo Quail, bonus track ‘Gangandi‘, plus the entirety of ‘The Otherworldly Big Band Experience‘ – Enslaved‘s stunning 2022 streaming event featuring fellow psychedelic Norwegian prog band Shaman Elephant.

Today, Enslaved have released the alternative version of their track ‘Forest Dweller‘, featuring internationally acclaimed composer and virtuoso cellist Jo Quail, alongside a beautiful visualizer video created by Costin Chioreanu.

Guitarist Ivar Bjørnson commented,

"It is an absolute honour to have Jo Quail on these special versions of ‘Forest Dweller’ and ‘Congelia’. We are all big fans of her unique work and style; I have personally had the pleasure of working with her for some time through By Norse Music (the label co-founded with Einar Selvik and our manager Simon Füllemann). When we had the chance to invite guest artists for the release show in Bergen of ‘Heimdal’ back in March 2023, Jo Quail was a given. She blew our (and the audience’s) collective minds with her powerful interpretation and performance on ‘Forest Dweller’ and ‘Congelia’ – to the degree that it simply could not be the end of the story. She has a take on her art that is one of a kind – impossible to categorise, haunting, emotive and atmospheric; we feel that this version of us joining forces underlines the artistic and musical kinship we feel being present between our two camps. "I’ve long been a fan of Enslaved, and I have huge admiration for the way their masterful compositions broaden and deepen with each release. When the band invited me to collaborate I had to re-read the email several times! I was honoured and humbled by this invitation from a band so greatly revered by so many of us all over the world, and I was tremendously excited by the chance to explore our sonic worlds together. Enslaved are the same people on and off stage, which is not always a given, and it’s something that, in my opinion, translates in their music and performance – the connection with their audience in concert draws us in deeply and it’s nothing short of inspiring. It was an absolute honour to be invited by Enslaved to perform Forest Dweller and Congelia with them in March 2023. I approached these two quite diverse tracks with immense respect, as both were already fully developed and everything sat perfectly and exactly where it needed to be, so any contribution from me needed to underpin or enhance the existing story arc rather than divert from it. Enslaved are musically very generous; they were wholly supportive of my suggestions for cello parts, and the result was a collaboration that I shall treasure for all time. I’m thrilled that this now has life beyond that one very special concert, and I hope you enjoy the result!"

Azam Ali’s Collaboration Project with John Fryer is still in the works but in the meantime, she will release her Solo work.

Internationally beloved singer-songwriter/producer AZAM ALI has signed to label COP International who will release her first studio album of new material since 2019’s revered PHANTOMS which Billboard called “ripe with dreamy sounds and melancholic lyrics, bridging the gap between organic and electronic with grooves that gently ground the songs.”

An artist whose music and art transcend genre, language, and structure, Azam Ali has contributed original music to film, television, videogames in addition to her own recording career as a solo artist and as one-half of chart-topping and ground-breaking international world electronic/ acoustic group Niyaz.

“Being an independent artist for years now after breaking away from the industry model of releasing my music through record labels, meeting [COP founder] Christian Petke and seeing his great passion for the music he meticulously curates and releases on COP International, reawakened the joy I experienced in the early days of my career when I would collaborate with a label to produce a body of work that raised the bar artistically,” explains Ali.
“Azam Ali is a seminal artist; a storyteller whose art connects us with the profound beauty of our shared human journey,” adds Petke. “Her music has left an indelible mark on my heart. Israeli gothic doom metal band TOMORROW’S RAIN announces their 2nd album, Ovdan, will be released on April 19th with AOP Records. The highly anticipated record the region’s rising band features guest collaborators from Mayhem, Sol Invictus, Dark Funeral, Mercyful Fate and Sisters of Mercy to name a few.

Commenting on the impending record, the band states:

"We are excited to announce our upcoming second full length album "Ovdan" to be released via A.O.P Records in April. "Ovdan" means Loss, the album was written and recorded during a dark period in our lives and the creative process was in fact our cure to get back to life after several traumatic events we faced, musically we pushed the boundaries and yet kept the vision started in our debut album "Hollow" (2020). Faroe Islands-based acclaimed Viking metal collective TÝR returns with their ninth full-length studio album, Battle Ballads, set for release on April 12th via Metal Blade Records!

When TÝR teamed up with the Symphony Orchestra of the Faroe Islands on February 8th, 2020, to record the double-disc/DVD release A Night At The Nordic House, founding frontman Heri Joensen was thrilled to bring together two of the music forms he loves most – folk and classical – into his band’s unorthodox form of music. But at the time, he couldn’t have imagined what a profound impact the collaboration would have on his musical vision, and how much it would influence and inform the album he would write a few years later.

"There’s a reason classical music is called classical," Joensen says. "It’s the classical way of doing it. And it creates these epic sounds that fit in perfectly with the kind of metal we do in TÝR. So, there’s full orchestration on all of the new songs."

The follow-up to the band’s 2019’s powerful progressive folk metal album Hel, the new Battle Ballads is aptly named – a crushing, soaring, batch of classical embellished songs that conjure images of galloping steeds, clashing swords, and hard-fought victories. And, as if it needs to be stated, the title Battle Ballads has nothing in common with the lighter-raising songs so prevalent in the 1980s.

"There are definitely two versions of a ballad," clarifies Joensen. "A lot of people think of hair metal, when they think of ballads. We are looking at ballads here in the Medieval sense. Apart from a couple of softer parts on the album, this is very much straight heavy metal with some folk and classical influences. I’m not sure what exactly one would call it – power metal, Viking metal, folk metal. It still fits in very much with what we do, only it feels bigger and more like these big soundscapes."

As much as TÝR would have liked to write, rehearse, and record with a symphony, schedule conflicts made it impossible to have the band and classical musicians to be in the same place at the same time. So the band did the next best thing. With Joensen at the helm, they wrote ten thunderous songs for Battle Ballads, then the bandleader sent the compositions to a Danish colleague Lars Winther living in England, who added the orchestral samples, paying close attention to the tone and tempo of the songs so the violins, violas, cellos, woodwinds, and horns fit complimented the traditional rock instruments. When the samples were all in place the album sounded impressive, but the tones weren’t perfectly blended. So, TÝR sent the album to veteran producer Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, The Black Dahlia Murder, Amaranthe) in Denmark to put together the final mix.

There’s no escaping the masterful blend of melody and savagery on Battle Ballads. The opening track "Hammered" funnels infectious riffs and searing licks through a variety of rhythm and tempo changes, "Unwandered Ways" is a triumphant, upbeat blend of vocal harmonies, joyous folk hooks, and dense, driving guitars, and features a solo break that demonstrate guitarist Hans Hammer’s acrobatic ability to shred. And "Battle Ballad" is a trample to the abyss, fueled by hammering beats, fleet-fingered guitars, orchestral swell and chugging guitar breaks.

In advance of the release of Battle Ballads, today TÝR unveils the record’s first single, "Axes," and its accompanying video.

Joensen comments, "‘Axes’ starts with a battle horn followed by a fast melodic and symphonic guitar riff introducing the progression and main theme of the song. Game Of Thrones-ish lyrics of gory and glorified hand-to-hand battle of Viking times, told from a first-person perspective. The verse is slow and heavy with a gritty, yet theatrical and melodic voice. The chorus is fast with a singalong choir, alternating vocally between intricate and brutally simple phrasings. It’s a short face-melting metal song based on a single melodic idea."

Projekt’s Sam Rosenthal was interviewed for the online edition of The Big Takeover, a New York City-based print magazine. Sam discusses Projekt’s 40th Anniversary and his musical projects.

MF: So what does interest you?

SR: I hear a good electronic/ambient demo every week. I gotta restrain myself from releasing them all. An amazing thing about 2023 vs 1997 is Projekt can release a new album every week, when it’s digital-only. We don’t have the financial and storage restraints of physical product like in the 90s. Back then, there were years where Projekt only had 2 new releases. But back then, a release could be promoted for 6 – 12 – 18 months. Those Lycia, and Black Tape and Love Spirals Downwards releases had long legs (as they say). Now, the stream wants to be replenished continuously.

MF: But you managed to get some fantastic and important bands on the label, and not all of them hitting that darkwave/deathrock vibe, either.

SR: Fortunately, yes. I have some of the most important classic American Ambient/electronic releases on Projekt. Steve Roach’s Structures from Silence, Quiet Music, Dreamtime Return and Michael Stearns’ Planetary Unfolding. They weren’t originally on Projekt, I licensed them from the artists over the years. Steve and I have been working together since the early 90s. We have a long collaboration, and he has 100 (more?) releases on Projekt! And Projekt is releasing the 40th anniversary remastered edition of Structures in February 2024. Many people think about the 90s heyday of Projekt’s darkwave releases, but when the clock struck 2000 Projekt only had around 100 releases, and now Projekt’s is releasing its 417th release. And there are 300 more on the Archive digital-only label. The ongoing focus has become artists in the space music ambient genres: Steve, Erik Wøllo, Forrest Fang, Stearns, and many others.

Mikael Stanne comments: "´Become Surrender´ was written and recorded during the Days Of The Lost sessions, but for some reason we left it out of the album. It has been something we have played during festivals and on our tours and the response has been nothing short of fantastic, so we decided to release it in the interim before we start rolling out singles for the second album. The video was shot during our sold out show at Pustervik here in our hometown of Gothenburg in front of a few of our closest friends and hopefully the joy and love we felt in the room that night shines through.
It’s a song about perseverance over distance and not giving in to despair or doubt. Turn it up!”

The critically praised record has been digitally reissued with 4 unreleased bonus tracks, just ahead of their first European tour with PERSEFONE, HYPNO5E and LAMPR3A in February/March and U.S. dates with CALVA LOUISE and VUKOVI in May.

About STELLAR CIRCUITS:

Formed in 2015, Stellar Circuits emerged to combine the conceptual polarities of groove-oriented music with progressive-minded technicality. Over the quartets lifespan, theyve managed to fulfill their own prophecy, formulating a core sound that is complex and layered, while providing a listenability that extends well beyond the rock genre. The Winston-Salem, NC foursome followed their 2015 debut EP with their first full-length album in 2018. Ways We Haunt would be recorded with North Carolinas own Jamie King (Between The Buried And Me, He Is Legend), a legend in his own right, bringing his signature touch to Stellar Circuits first long form release.

Generating significant attention, especially from the bands more veteran industry peers, Stellar Circuits would go on to be invited as special guests on Chevelles 2021 N.I.R.A.T.I.A.S. tour. Completing a nationwide trek that introduced Stellar Circuits to a significantly broader audience, the foursome immediately saw their fanbase increase exponentially, prompting a shift in their attention to a new record with which they could continue to build on the solid foundation they had since established.

Sight to Sound, Stellar Circuits sophomore release, sees the band working once again with Jamie King to convey their growth and expansion on what they do best. Vocalist frontman Ben Beddick highlights the forward momentum, relaying how the band wanted to push past the point of comfort when writing this music. To make something real and honest that we can all stand by.

Goliath was recorded at JFD Studios in Dallas, TX and Studio City, CA as well as The Cabin in Orlando, FL by J-F Dagenais, who also produced and engineered the album. For the mixing and mastering, the band returned to Chris Clancy with assistance from Colin Richardson. The cover artwork required an image that captured the iconic battle of David versus Goliath theme that is echoed throughout the album while matching the power of the music. The band enlisted renowned Berlin metal illustrator Eliran Kantor (TESTAMENT, FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE) to create the artwork which took the KATAKLYSM look and gave it a macabre filter that compliments the brooding sense of uneasiness that was felt during the writing and recording of the album.

At this stage in the game, the name Whitechapel commands respect. Already sitting on one of the most enviable catalogs in contemporary metal, in 2019 they dropped The Valley, showcasing a confident evolution in their sound and standing as a true landmark release that sets a new standard for the genre. "To me, it was like the stars aligning for us to create our almost perfect record in regard to songwriting, vocal performance, the mix and master, and the artwork," says guitarist Alex Wade. "We like to look at our albums as chapters of our career, and that is one chapter I will never forget. I think it really solidified that we can embrace a new sound, and if we execute it properly, then the fanbase is going to support and enjoy it." In 2021, they return with that album’s successor, the mighty Kin, which is an even more dynamic and diverse collection, further advancing the band’s sound into new territory without losing sight of what brought them to this point.

Early in the writing, there was some discussion of the album being like ‘The Valley’ part II, not literally called that, but in how the songs sound and flow through it. The recording process for Necromanteum took place over the course of several weeks with producer Jason Suecof in Florida and saw the return of live drums since COVID-19 restrictions made doing so on Graveside Confessions impossible. Mastered by Mark Lewis in Nashville, TN, the album was also co-produced by vocalist Scott Ian Lewis and drummer Shawn Cameron. The cover artwork glows with an emerald and lavender fog; a ghostly energy erupting from the depths of a cemetery. Designed by renowned comic book artist E.M. Gist, this gateway represents the questions we ask about what lies on the other side of reality.

Decades ago, wealthy intellectuals began installing psychomanteum in their homes; a secret room completely filled with mirrors, or a single mirror, and in complete darkness, in order to speak to the dead in other dimensions, and gain their knowledge. It was often used as a healing tool to help dissolve grief or considered a form of prophecy. Necromanteum presents the concept: What if you could use that kind of room to speak with death, itself? What secrets of the world could you uncover from a direct conversation with the grim reaper? Not a monster, but a fellow intellect.

In the mid-1980s, Denmark’s ARTILLERY established themselves as being at the cutting edge of the thrash movement. Four decades later, they continue to destroy. X was tracked in Medley Studio in Copenhagen, Denmark with producer Søren Andersen, who the band have worked with on every record since 2009’s When Death Comes. Notorious and prolific Cleveland cult, MIDNIGHT, will unleash its sixth full-length, Hellish Expectations, on March 8th via Metal Blade Records.

One-man-army, Athenar, has been churning out an ungodly racket, dropping countless demos, splits, and EPs for over two decades, ultimately slaying the metal/punk underground with his own, highly addictive brand of lust, grime, and sleaze. Filthy, belligerent, and unapologetically obnoxious, MIDNIGHT makes music to start fights to and in 2024 Athenar returns with Hellish Expectations, a ten-track sonic assault of blackened heavy metal nefariousness.

"It’s a knuckle dragger with a fat cutoff," elaborates Athenar, "Pure testosterone meat. Probably the most concise and straight to the point MIDNIGHT album to date, and all written in a weekend. The album was written on pure reaction upon leaving the studio after listening to raw tracks from the previous album Let There Be Witchery. The final mix of that album was good, but at the time of laying it down in the studio, I didn’t like what I was hearing and demanded a new leviathan of an album to be written that weekend."

In advance of the official unveiling of Hellish Expectations, MIDNIGHT has dropped the record’s first single, album closer "F.O.A.L." (AKA "Fuck Off And Live"), alongside an accompanying video.

Proclaims Athenar, "‘Fuck Off And Live’ is an ode to the people who peacefully want to die to escape the realities of life, while they should really live and suffer."

Compared to past offerings, Moon Healer is as bone-crushing as JOB FOR A COWBOY has ever been. But it’s more consistent and conceptual, composed with the utmost enthusiasm and confidence. "The evolution of our sound has become a big part of the band," Davy says. "As we mature as musicians, our tastes and interests naturally expand. With age comes more experience and ideas that we wouldn’t have considered in our earlier years."

When discussing the lyrical genesis of songs "Grinding Wheels Of Ophanim," "Into The Crystalline Crypts," and latest single, "Beyond The Chemical Doorway," Davy’s writing gets cryptic and elliptical-sounding, part Philip K. Dick, part Timothy Leary. "I envision this as a death metal album born from the mystical confines of an alchemist’s laboratory. The music acts as potent potions, inducing hallucinogenic journeys that unlock the secrets of the universe."

With "Beyond The Chemical Doorway," Davy explores Gnosticism — an occult teaching based on Gnosis, a state of transcendence achieved through intuitive, unconventional means — by way of Hieronymus Bosch’s art. Elaborates Davy, "On Moon Healer, we unravel the dismal narrative of a close friend consumed by an unwavering pursuit of enlightenment. They achieve this through a compulsive embrace of hallucinogenic drugs. This storyline emerges from the foundation set in our earlier album, Sun Eater, delving deeper into the intricacies brewing within our friend’s psyche.

"When under the influence of these drugs," he continues, "this individual claimed to encounter entities and find themselves in indescribable worlds that defy rational comprehension. Many who undergo such experiences draw intriguing parallels between diverse facets of Gnostic philosophy, biblical depictions of angels, and the stages of Bardo Thodol delineated in the Tibetan Book Of The Dead. In the album’s opener, ‘Beyond The Chemical Doorway,’ our friend vividly voices his hallucinations, recounting the experience of breaching forbidden, gnostic-like realms, with each account culminating in the utter unraveling of his being."

Moon Healer was produced by Jason Suecof (Death Angel, The Black Dahlia Murder, Deicide) at his Audiohammer Studios and is the first JOB FOR A COWBOY album to feature session drummer Navene Koperweis (ex-Animosity). Davy previously worked with Koperweis in the progressive death metal side project Fleshwrought, which released Dementia/Dyslexia through Metal Blade in 2010. Koperweis also worked as a session drummer for Machine Head and Whitechapel and is currently in the band Entheos, whose third full-length came out on Metal Blade in March 2023.
